Work is underway on an Interstate 35 project that will likely slow commuters this summer and fall.
Crews began a project to refresh pavement on I-35 between 151st and Santa Fe Streets on March 16. They anticipate temporary lane closures beginning March 30 with the $15 million repaving project to be completed in December.
Construction will be completed in two phases. During the first phase, crews will be setting traffic controls and constructing median crossovers. All I-35 traffic will be on the northbound lanes as the southbound lanes are reconstructed. The southbound I-35 exit ramp to Old U.S. 56 Highway will be closed. A detour will direct traffic to U.S. 169 to northbound Kansas 7 Highway back to Old 56 Highway.
Officials anticipate phase one will be completed in July.
During phase two, all I-35 traffic will use the southbound lanes as the northbound lanes are reconstructed. Ramps from Old 56 Highway to northbound I-35 and the ramp from northbound I-35 to Santa Fe will be closed. Detours will route traffic from Old 56 Highway to the 151st Street-I-35 interchange. Drivers wanting to access Santa Fe from northbound I-35 will be diverted to 151st Street exit and then to Mur-Len Road or to 119th Street and southbound Strang Line Road to access Santa Fe. Phase two is tentatively scheduled to start in August and be completed in December.
The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 miles per hour. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time for commutes.
